Philosophy of Education

H- Holistically approaches student learning

As John Dewey once stated, “Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is not preparation of life; Education is life itself.” I believe that teaching involves active learning, which promotes students to become independent, life longer learners. To understand the human growth and development of my students, it is crucial to apply the theories of Piaget and Vygotsky. Piaget’s theory explains the stages of human development, which helps teachers understand students’ thinking processes and abilities. It also helps teachers to plan appropriate lessons to target the different cognitive skills of the students. Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development is also important; this theory demonstrates the abilities of the students. In my classroom, I will determine the skills and objectives my students can achieve independently, as well as which skills and objectives can be met with guidance.

U- Understands diversity

All students can learn; however, students learn at different rates and different methods. As an educator, I must meet the needs of all students and account for the differences amongst the students. I will utilize a differentiated instruction chart in my lessons, as well as implement this chart in my teaching pedagogy. Despite the differences in the classroom, all students will be treated with the same equity and fairness. I will ensure that there is no discrimination nor bias by explaining the expectations and disciplines of the classroom. Students will be able to openly express their ideas, appreciate cultural diversity, and collaborate to form student and teacher relationships.

M- Manages learning environments

Hilary Clinton once said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This quote is quite meaningful in developing positive learning environments. To provide the most effective learning environment to students, it is important to collaborate and communicate with parents, colleagues, administrators, and the community. As an educator, I want to communicate with parents about safety guidelines, rules and policies of the classroom, and individual student performance. I would also like to collaborate with local schools and universities to assist with out-reach activities. I believe that I can improve student achievement and classroom management through collaboration and communication.

A-Assesses student learning based on national and state standards

For each lesson, I will incorporate the Next Generation standards, as well as the NSTA standards in regards to chemistry content.  I also feel that it is vital to incorporate the technology and literacy standards, in order for students to become well-rounded individuals. These standards will be used to create student outcomes, as well as classroom assessments. I will use multiple forms of student assessment, such as informal and formal, to ensure student outcomes are being met. These assessments will be used to evaluate student understanding, as well as correct any misconceptions of the content.

N- Newer applications to student learning through technology

In the digital era, there are new advancements and approaches to creating and utilizing technology. Technology has made a significant impact in student learning, as well as many career fields. Therefore, it is vital that students develop technology skills to apply in and out of the classroom. To promote the use of technology, I will record grades and retrieve information using an online platform. Students will also use this platform to submit activities and keep track of their student performance. In my lesson plans, I will incorporate technology for enrichment activities, such as creating a flipbook for a unit and using computer codes in Excel to develop graphs.
